Capacity building
Research Status: OngoingBarney Thomas at Puketawai |
Introduction
Healthy catchments depend on healthy and strong organizations and individuals who are both knowledgeable and actively engaged in the management, use, and understanding of their catchments.
Since its inception in 2000, the ICM programme has supported and encouraged capacity bulding in relation to catchment management science and its use both locally and internationally.
Research Results
Capacity building has taken many forms through the life of the ICM programme. In general terms, it has been achieved through the development and dissemination of knowledge, tools, training, workshops and conferences, and technical assistance to strengthen the effectiveness of community-based partnerships working across the catchment to achieve both our science goals and those of our stakeholder community .
One of the strands of capacity building has been via the hosting of internships, students, and teaching fellows, many of which have come from outside of New Zealand to work alongside and study with ICM researchers. Our interns have contributed significantly to the success of the ICM research programme and have gone on to achieve great things in their countries.
Another key element of capacity building has been with local iwi who have travelled the journey with the programme and maintained a key and active interest. Through mentoring and involvement in ICM research activities there is now a body of active individuals engaged in local resource management equiped with both the tools and understanding to enable their active particpation in local affairs.
