Iwi capacity building
One of the enduring highlights of the ICM research programme has been the involvement from Day 1 of the programme with local iwi. Local iwi have travelled the "journey" with the research programme and have maintained a key and active interest in both the science and the process of ICM.
Through mentoring and involvement in ICM research activities, there is now a body of active iwi individuals engaged in local resource management who are equiped with both the tools and understanding to enable their active participation in local affairs.
Training and support in the use of GIS and spatial information systems have enhanced the way iwi have managed their matauranga Maori as well as improve their ability to respond to "matters of interest" such as responding to a myriad of issues and activities that impact on cultural values (e.g., dealing with resource management consents and other development pressures).
