Water augmentation
Research Status: OngoingModelled irrigable land in the Motupiko Catchment |
Introduction
The Nelson-Tasman region suffers from seasonal water shortages that limit the potential for agricultural and horticultural development. The Tasman Regional Water Study (2003) identified these water short areas and subsequently there have been several projects in the region investigating the possibility of water storage and augmenting flows in the summer to meet irrigation demand.
Research Approach
Inestigations have included:
- Modelling river flows in the Kainui for a water storage dam that has since been built for the Wai-iti.
- Investigating the amount of irrigable land in the Motupiko Catchment.
Investigating possible dam sites (with Tonkin & Taylor) to meet irrigation demand and modelling river flows to test suitability of proposed dams.
