Our theory of knowledge
A theory of knowledge is foundational to a study of institutional learning. The cornerstone for our theory of knowledge was Nonaka’s model of explicit and tacit knowledge transformations. Nonaka’s work pointed us towards the role of tacit knowledge, and our work with local government and cross-sectoral groups moved us more deeply into what it takes to share, sustain and deepen tacit knowledge – as access to collective intelligence.
We were influenced by Scharmer’s distinction of “Self Transcending Knowledge” as the third key dimension of knowledge, and have come more simply to refer to this dimension as wisdom.
The core of our theory of knowledge is based on the interplay between the holding and sharing of explicit knowledge, tacit knowing, and wisdom – individual, and collective. Our learning edge of theory is to come to understand more deeply the knowledge transformation across this knowledge landscape. This is leading us to a deeper inquiry around the Art of Harvesting, and of relationship of knowledge legacy to transformational practice. (If in transformation we come to know our Self anew, what happens to the knowing of the old self? What should we hold on to?).
We are refining our articulation of our theory of knowledge.
