Our theory of change
The purpose of all this work is not to generate new knowledge alone – but to make a positive difference in the world. What is the change we are intending to make – and how might we be able to measure whether that change is being realised?
A theory of change helps identify the issue(s) we will address, who is involved, the target audience, the context in which the programme will take place, and the strategies that will be enacted to achieve specific outcomes. At its most specific, a theory of change identifies: What actions, with what people, in what setting, will produce what outcomes?
Research note 5 – Emergence - outlines our current ideas on our theory of change. This is work in progress and we are powerfully interested in connecting with others working and thinking in this area.
We are working with an intergenerational network of practice colleagues in New Zealand and in working dialogue with leading players in the field of social innovation and profound change.
We have been powerfully influenced by a simple paper by Meg Wheatley and Debbie Frieze on “Taking Social Innovation to Scale Using Emergence”. This paper resonated with many of the examples and approaches explored in Westley et al, “Getting to Maybe”.
Theory U as articulated by Otto Scharmer and Generon Consulting has become the most comprehensive theoretical framing of the social technologies that underlie our work.
With Garrison Institute (New York) we are working to develop a foundational methodology for their program on Transformational Ecology.
